NewJeans Wins at the 'Japan Record Awards' for Second Consecutive Year and Becomes a Grand Prize Contender

NewJeans (Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein) has achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the Excellent Work Award at the 66th Japan Record Awards with their song "Supernatural," according to their agency ADOR on November 21. The Excellent Work Award is given to songs released that year that have gained significant popularity and are recognized for their artistic quality, originality, and concept. This year, NewJeans’ song is the only work by an overseas artist to receive this honor.

As one of the ten songs selected for the Excellent Work Award, "Supernatural" is now also in the running for the prestigious Grand Prize, to be announced at the live awards ceremony on December 30.

The Japan Record Awards, hosted by the Japan Composer's Association, began in 1959 and is the country's most historic and prestigious music awards ceremony. NewJeans already made waves last year, even before their official debut in Japan, by winning both the Excellent Work Award ("Ditto") and a Special Award, achieving a double win.

This year, fueled by their growing popularity, NewJeans will participate in several major Japanese year-end broadcasts and festivals. They will appear on Nihon TV's Best Artist 2024 on November 30 and Fuji TV's 2024 FNS Music Festival on December 4. On December 31, they will become the first K-pop girl group to perform at Japan's largest indoor year-end festival, Countdown Japan 24/25, wrapping up 2024 with a significant milestone.

NewJeans has had a stellar year in Japan.

Their Japanese debut single "Supernatural," released in June, topped the Oricon chart on the day of its release and was certified Gold Disc (for over 100,000 copies shipped) by the Recording Industry Association of Japan. As of October, the album has sold over 1.26 million copies (Circle Chart). The title track "Supernatural" dominated local music charts upon release and achieved high rankings on both domestic and international charts, showcasing NewJeans' global influence.

The group also set a record as the fastest overseas artist (1 year and 11 months) to perform at Tokyo Dome. Their two-day fan meeting, Bunnies Camp 2024 Tokyo Dome, held on June 26-27, sold out completely, drawing over 91,200 attendees. NewJeans has continued to leave a lasting impression with numerous appearances on Japan's major terrestrial music programs.

The Japan Record Awards will be broadcast live on TBS on December 30.

Meanwhile, NewJeans is also set to attend the 9th Asia Artist Awards (AAA 2024) on December 27 at the Impact Challenger Hall 1-2 in Bangkok, Thailand. First held in 2016, the Asia Artist Awards is the first Korean award ceremony to honor both actors and singers. AAA 2024 will be hosted by actor Ryu Jun Yeol, alongside IVE's Jang Wonyoung and ZEROBASEONE's Sung Hanbin.
